MULTI-COUNTRY WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPMENT OF ACCREDITATION STANDARDS FOR MATERNITY WARDS AND NEONATAL DEPARTMENTS, 15-16 September 2014, Belgrade

The two day workshop on Development of Accreditation Standards for Maternity Wards and Neonatal Departments was held on 15-16 September 2014, in hotel Park in Belgrade. The workshop was organized in partnership with UNICEF, SEE HN RHDC on Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement, Serbia on behalf of SEEHN and Ministry of Health, Republic of Serbia.

The meeting was opened by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health Vicko Ferenc, MD PhD, saying that he believes that development of accreditation standards for maternity wards and neonatal departments will contribute in achieving long-lasting results of the „Мother and Baby Friendly Hospitals“ program. After that, the participants were addressed by  Michel Saint-Lot, UNICEF representative in Serbia and Dr Snezana Manic, director of the Agency for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions of Serbia and SEE HN RHDC on Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement, stressing the importance of this meeting in improving the quality of mother and child  healthcare.

The workshop was attended by representatives of SEEHN member countries: Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Besides these participants, the workshop was also attended by health professionals from Serbia in the field of mother and child healthcare.

The aim of the workshop was to provide an overview of existing practices and challenges in delivery of high quality and safety services in the field of mother and child healthcare and identify framework for quality improvement in this field. This will be base for development of accreditation standards for maternity wards and neonatal departments.

Director of the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Accredition in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AKAZ), Ahmed Novo MD, PhD presented their achievements in this field. AKAZ developed BFH accreditation standards, based on UNICEF’s “Ten steps to successful breastfeeding”. So far, AKAZ accreditated two maternity wards and two are waiting for decision. By the beginning of 2015 AKAZ expects to have 10 maternity wards accredited.

 

Giorgio Tamburlini, MD, PhD from Center for Child Health and Development and European School for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, presented key concepts for improving the quality of maternal and newborn care, international experiences and global initiatives in this field.

As workshop outcome it was agreed for AZUS to develop and forward to all workshop participants, recommendations for further actions regarding evaluation and quality improvement of child and mother healthcare, providing that each country adjusts given recommendations according to country needs and respecting existing national programs for healthcare quality evaluation/assessment (inspection, certification, licensing, accreditation, etc.).
